Description

A one-day in-person Sunday workshop with stitch and photography, led by artist Jessa Fairbrother at her studio in Bristol.

The day will focus on the key ways stitching by hand on the photographic image with embroidery thread.

This is aimed at using specific skills for you to develop with your own work. The morning will start with some key ways of transferring working with stitch onto the photograph.

Jessa will then work with you to help resolve problems you might be having with your own artwork.

This is aimed at artists / photographers already able to sew on fabric, who have maybe experimented on paper and want some help creatively or technically.

This will enable you to learn more advanced methods of stitching on to photographs by hand, experimenting with embroidery threads and marking your own work.

Guided sessions in the morning will progress to you with your own work  and 1:1 help and support with your existing project.

Please bring the work you intend to develop with this process.

About me

I have been sewing all my life and began to stitch into the photographic image over ten years ago with a body of work Conversations with my mother. This led me to developing a method for using the needle and thread on the image to make very specific embroidered work. I am currently studying Historical Hand embroidery at the Royal School of Needlework and incorporate some of the techniques in my newer works.

Important Information.

Access

My studio is on the second floor of an old building and there is no lift. There are four sets of stairs.

What you should bring:

Your photographic work that you would like to develop with embroidery  techniques (plus some copies if you have them)

I use DMC embroidery threads which is what I’ll be supplying for the day, but if you have a speciality thread you’d like to try out please do bring it along. If you have a pair of scissors you particularly like to use, or needles that are unusual sizes, bring them too.

Glasses if you need them! This is painstaking and fiddly work. I have to wear glasses to do it. If you normally wear glasses or contact lenses you should definitely bring them.

It’s a Sunday. Bring a packed lunch as not much is open on a Sunday cafe-wise! (There is a supermarket nearby)

Define ‘confident’

You can sew already but maybe only worked on fabric so far, or maybe you have worked on paper with embroidery thread already and want to expand your technique. You are likely to have an arts practice (doesn’t have to be full time!) and want to work out how to incorporate this in your work.

Cancellation Policy

This workshop takes place in my small  studio at Jamaica Street in Bristol so the number of participants is capped at 3.

In the unlikely event I have to cancel the workshop you will get a full refund of your workshop fee.

If you need to cancel more than 7 days before the start of the workshop you’ll get a refund minus a £20 admin charge.

If you need to cancel within 7 days prior to the start of the workshop the fee is non-refundable.
